What You Need to Know About Broken Tooth Treatment

When a tooth breaks, the break will be classified by its severity.  Treatment will be based on the type of broken tooth the patient has and whether or not there is associated pain.  Tooth breaks range from the very minor, which may or may not need dental treatment, to the severe, which will need immediate treatment.  The severity of the dental injury will determine if you can wait to be seen by your regular dentist or if you need to be seen by an emergency dentist.

Minor tooth breaks will not damage any nerves or cause any severe pain.  These might only be noticed when the patient runs their tongue over the damaged tooth.  There may not need to be any treatment required if this does not bother the patient.  If this is bothersome, then light polishing might be needed to smooth out any rough areas.

A more severe tooth break will most definitely require dental treatment.  These breaks will likely cause pain.  Pain may be associated with eating, or drinking, or be constant.  Either way pain indicated the need to be seen and treated immediately.  With the more severe tooth breaks there might be bleeding involved.  Usual treatment for severe tooth breaks will involve a root canal.

The most severe tooth breaks will be vertical breaks or split roots.  These type of breaks will more than likely result in the tooth needing to be removed.  These breaks will begin in the root of the tooth and extend towards the chewing surface and are very painful.  Immediate dental treatment is indicated.

As you can see, tooth breaks can vary from the very mild to the very painful.  With any tooth break it is important to seek dental care so that the injury will not worsen.  Treatment plans will vary based on the severity of the individual tooth break and will be decided by your dentist.
